From Passer-by to Crossing the Street, part 2

Before reading this post, I invite you to read Part 1 of this story, at www.respitefortheweary.com.

Part 2

--10 weeks ago Peri and I ended our visit by having a conversation about marathons. Both she and I have participated in several each. I laughed at myself, and she laughed at me, when we found out that her best time is over an hour faster than my best time! I told Peri the "why" behind my marathons when I explained my sister's and my ministry called Hope Walking aCross America.  Our common goal is to walk a marathon in every state. While doing so, we pray for that state, present God's word at an event of some kind, and then provide a financial blessing to a ministry or need. After I left Peri's house, she looked up our website at www.HopeWalkingaCrossAmerica.com.
My sister Peggy, my daughter Maggie, Peri, and me

--91/2 weeks ago I received a thank you note from Peri for coming to her home. She thanked me for her haircut, our meaningful time together, and our soul-connection. Honestly, I should have written HER a thank you note! Her zest for life is contagious. She finished her card with these ambitious words: Your sister's and your ministry fills me with both life and energy. Imagine this: each of you taking turns pushing me in your next marathon. I'm game if  you are. I will add it to my bucket list (which she has since renamed "dream list"). As I read these words, I knew I was "game." I called my sister Peggy in Texas, and she 100% agreed.

In keeping with the bible passage I referred to in my last post concerning the good Samaritan who crossed the street to see about and tend to the wounded man lying on the road-side, I once again felt a sweet connection with this story as I envisioned my sister and me having the privilege of "picking up" our new friend and pushing her with hope.

--8 weeks ago until 3 weeks ago I have been going over to Peri's house every Monday and Wednesday (except for holidays) to workout with Peri. She has much knowledge and experience in exercise physiology, so her part in the marathon-preparation is to train my upper body so that I will be strong enough to push her in the jogger-stroller. She demonstrates helpful stretches, and my inflexible body attempts to imitate them. She commands me to run up and down her stairs, and do push-ups, planks, and dips, and I obey (oh my, she's tough!). We're a team…walking with hope TODAY. Yes, the marathon in March is our ultimate goal, but we both know without saying, she may not live 'til then. Therefore, the step by step process is really what it's all about. While we're together TODAY, I encourage Peri, and she encourages me. We remind each other that we have a common hope to get us through each day, and that hope is Jesus Christ; there's no better, deeper, more genuine connection than the author of life and love Himself.

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another-- and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrew 10:23-25
