Over this past week, I have been slowly processing my mother-in-law's homegoing. What a woman, mentor, and friend! I will miss my Mev, but it was time. She is now with her Savior, finally and forever.
In this quiet place of joy and sorrow, the Lord has kindly allowed me to see that her legacy lives on. I am realizing that she has handed down to each of my children an immeasurable treasure, a Christlike quality, that will be carried forward through each one of them.
These intangible riches are as follows:
Poise – Mev had a natural regal-ness about her. She knew who she was in Christ Jesus, and it was as if her bodily frame carried his royal Name. She moved with grace, spoke with kindness, and longed for others to know him personally.
I see this same character trait in my daughter Maggie.
Strength and dignity are her clothing and she smiles at the future. Proverbs 31:25
Prayer – Mev moved mountains from her “quiet time spot” on the couch in her little sitting room. She knew and believed that she was talking to Almighty God who could do the impossible. However, she also knew him as her intimate Friend who daily carried her burdens. It is an understatement to say that Mev interceded for MANY!
I also see this prayer warrior mindset in my son Brent.
What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer. (JM Scriven, 1855)
Present – Mev made herself available. She possessed the rare gift of listening. After being attentive, she couldn’t help but encourage whoever was sitting with her. In these wonderful one-on-one visits, Mev’s ultimate and consistent goal was to point each person to Jesus.
I see this same pursuit of others in my son Davis.
Encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. 1 Thess. 5:11
Playful– Mev loved to laugh. Her lightheartedness was truly one of her greatest qualities. She helped others to not take life so seriously. Her laughter came from a deeper place; the Spirit’s joy bubbled up and spilled out over everyone. She was contagiously fun.
I see this same quality in my daughter Emmy.
A joyful heart is good medicine…Proverbs 17:22
So as I grieve the loss of mother-in-law, I also rejoice in the gain of what she has passed to my children. She inspires me to be “that kind of grandmother!”
I will miss Mev more than I can express with words; but I’m so grateful to God that through Christ that her legacy lives on.
One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.
Psalm145:4
The seeds along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. Luke 8:12
Dear Lord,
May your living word not fall "along the hard dry path" of our hearts. Please give us a desire to truly hear you, not with our ears only, but with our attentive soul as well. Help us to realize the difference. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
